D&DNext: Monster Design

dndlogo

Check out this article on Legends & Lore on Wizards.com about what it means to be able to hit in D&D.

"One area that we've seen a lot of comments on—both online and in the playtest survey we sent out—concerns monsters. Right now, our monster design is rudimentary at best. We're taking a few cues from each edition and leaning on some system math that is far from final. At this stage, though, I can give you some insight into where the design is headed."

D&D Next Playest May 2012 Review

dndlogo

Well I for one have been really excited about playtesting the new version of D&D. I got my chance at Yottaquest along with 17 other people Sunday May 27th. First of all, everyone had to be signed up as a playtester at www.dndnext.com . After this we talked about the new changes and what this playtest was trying to accomplish. After about 30 minutes of everyone listening to me talk, we broke into three groups and played. I was one of the GM's. My players and I had a blast.  Jeremy Cox was one of our other GM's and he wrote a really cool review http://community.wizards.com/dndnext/go/thread/view/75882/29145369/My_Playtest_Experience_at_my_Local_Store,_Yottaquest_(Unabridged)?sdb=1

D&DNext Bounded Accuracy

dndlogo

Check out this article on Legends & Lore on Wizards.com about what it means to be able to hit in D&D.

"The basic premise behind the bounded accuracy system is simple: we make no assumptions on the DM's side of the game that the player's attack and spell accuracy, or their defenses, increase as a result of gaining levels. Instead, we represent the difference in characters of various levels primarily through their hit points, the amount of damage they deal, and the various new abilities they have gained. Characters can fight tougher monsters not because they can finally hit them, but because their damage is sufficient to take a significant chunk out of the monster's hit points; likewise, the character can now stand up to a few hits from that monster without being killed easily, thanks to the character's increased hit points. Furthermore, gaining levels grants the characters new capabilities, which go much farther toward making your character feel different than simple numerical increases."

Adventure Background

Long past are the days when drow ruled over Shadowdale from the Twisted Tower—or are they? Beneath the sleepy farming community, an old evil stirs. The drow and their foul Underdark minions have set eyes on the Dalelands, but to what end is anyone’s guess. Now, it’s up to an unlikely band of adventurers to defend Shadowdale from the drow threat and learn what Lolth and her villainous followers are up to. Success means a respite from danger. Failure could doom the surface world.
